Thank you for your interest in joining the South Ward Fire Company. Volunteering as a firefighter is a rewarding way to serve your community while gaining valuable skills and experience. We understand that you may have many questions about what’s involved, and we hope this page provides the answers you need.
What We Do
The South Ward Fire Company provides vital emergency services to Tamaqua Borough and surrounding townships, including:
✅ Fire Suppression (Engine & Truck Company Operations)
✅ Wildland Firefighting
✅ Rescue Operations
✅ Emergency Response Support
Commitment & Training
We place a strong emphasis on training and firefighter safety to ensure we deliver the highest level of service. Training is offered locally and in-station, and all required gear will be provided.
Training Requirements
🛠 New Firefighters (No Experience)
- PA State Fire Academy Modular Curriculum (166 hours, completed in four modules)
- First Aid/CPR Certification (8 hours)
- Hazardous Materials Operations Course (16 hours)
- Ongoing In-House Training (Every Thursday, 1-3 hours per session)
🛠 Experienced Firefighters
- Prior training and certifications will be evaluated by Fire Company Officers
- Additional training may be required based on experience level
Company Meetings & In-House Training
📅 Thursday Nights: Weekly hands-on training sessions
📅 Second Tuesday of Each Month: Company meeting (great opportunity to meet fellow members!)
Training continues throughout your firefighting career—from the newest recruit to the Chief, all members must maintain the highest level of proficiency.
Balancing Volunteering with Life
We understand that work and family commitments come first. Our Fire Officers will work with you to create a flexible training schedule that fits your availability. Much of the training can be completed at your own pace, and we offer creative solutions to help you meet requirements.
